Summary of Services
Gynecologic Oncologists provide care to women who have some type of gynecologic cancer, and their comprehensive management of patient care includes the utilization of colposcopy, laser, LEEP, laparoscopy, and pelvic surgery. Care may also consist of cooperation between our physicians and medical oncologists who administer chemotherapy and radiation oncologists who administer radiation therapy. IU Women's Healthcare physicians care for patients at the Indiana University Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute designated Clinical Cancer Center.
The IU Cancer Center is a multidisciplinary cancer care center offering the services of social workers, specially trained nurses, and staff in addition to the specialist physicians. Patients are welcome to schedule appointments for consultations regarding genetic risk determination and screening, participation in clinical research trials such as the Gynecologic Oncology Group (a multi-center research group throughout the US and Canada which operates clinical trials to find new Gynecologic cancer treatments), and other investigational therapies and treatments.
Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is a procedure in which a physician uses a small telescope, called a "laparascope" to look into the abdomen of a woman. During the procedure, the laparascope is inserted into the navel of a woman, and her abdomen is filled with a gas in order to provide the physician with a better view of the internal organs. Laparoscopy is used in diagnosing various gynecologic problems.
Colposcopy
Colposcopy allows your doctor to look at your cervix through a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope. Colposcopes help your doctor detect problems of the cervix that are not visible to the naked eye. If the results of your Colposcopy indicate that you have abnormal cell growth, your doctor may need to perform additional tests.
Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
LEEP is a procedure that enables the doctor to remove abnormal cells from your cervix. Doctors will perform a LEEP if your Pap smear results indicate that your have abnormal cell growth in your cervix which may eventually lead to cancer. LEEPs are performed in the office and take a relatively short period of time to perform. You may have mild cramping or bleeding following a LEEP, but recovery is fairly painless and quick.
