Our History
Our Mission

Our History
In 1924, William H. Coleman, a wealthy Indianapolis businessman, donated funds to Indiana University to build a maternity hospital. The hospital was to be built in memory of Coleman’s stepdaughter, Suemma Vagen Coleman Atkins, who died of complications resulting from her pregnancy. Coleman Hospital for Women was dedicated on October 20, 1927. It is in Coleman Hospital that University Ob/Gyn finds its roots.

In the early years, Obstetrics & Gynecology were housed in two separate departments. Gynecology was a part of the Department of Surgery and Obstetrics was a freestanding department. Over time the two specialties were brought under the single Department of Ob/Gyn of Indiana University.

The Department of Ob/Gyn was housed in Coleman Hospital until 1974 when Indiana University Hospital was built. At that time the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology moved from Coleman to University Hospital. In keeping with the wishes of William H. Coleman to provide medical care for women, the second floor of University Hospital was renamed the Coleman Center for Women.

In the early 1980’s, the faculty members of the Department of Ob/Gyn at Indiana University formed a corporation to be funded by the clinical efforts of the department. The corporation was named, University Obstetricians-Gynecologists Inc., and it was incorporated so as to ensure the future viability and health of the clinical, teaching, and research missions of the department.

There are many sub-specialties that fall under the specialty of Ob/Gyn including: Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology, General Obstetrics, General Gynecology, and Urogynecology. The history of University Obstetricians-Gynecologists, Inc. is a long and rich one that has always included excellent care for women. Our joint mission is to ensure the training of young doctors and to provide the highest possible quality care to women in the future.
