Annual Well Woman Exams
The well women exam is a key part of preventative health care in women. A well woman exam consists of an evaluation of your general health and an examination of your breasts and reproductive organs. During your exam, the doctor will discuss your health history as well as any current health concerns or issues that you might have.

Pap Smear Test
Your doctor performs a Pap smear test during your pelvic exam. A small amount of cells are removed from your cervix, and the cells are analyzed under a microscope to determine if there is any abnormal cell growth on your cervix. Abnormal cell growth can eventually lead to cancer of the cervix, so it is important that you receive periodic Pap smear tests as a method of early detection and prevention.

Colposcopy
Colposcopy is the first test that is performed if your Pap smear results are abnormal. Colposcopy allows your doctor to look at your cervix through a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope. Colposcopes help your doctor detect problems of the cervix that are not visible to the naked eye. If the results of your Colposcopy indicate that you have abnormal cell growth, your doctor may need to perform additional tests.

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
LEEP is a procedure that enables the doctor to remove abnormal cells from your cervix. Doctors will perform a LEEP if your Pap smear results indicate that your have abnormal cell growth in your cervix which may eventually lead to cancer. LEEPs are performed in the office and take a relatively short period of time to perform. You may have mild cramping or bleeding following a LEEP, but recovery is fairly painless and quick.
